NuNee® inventor and triathlete Michael Emmerling tells his story and explains how his novel invention works to reduce knee pain.
The image above is of an early prototype of NuNee® which was 3D printed.
NuNee® consists of 3 components that will be sold as a kit. The kit will contain NuNee®, a knee wrap, and patella patches.
Anticipated delivery of the finished product is scheduled for April 2018.
NuNee® testing has been underway since May 2017 and the results have been nothing short of amazing.
NuNee® has withstood the rigors of training for Ironman competition which requires long rides up to 7 hours and long runs up to 3 hours. It has passed the tests of both comfort and durability with flying colors.
But of course the most important element of NuNee® is it's ability to reduce or eliminate knee pain. Well...we are super excited to report that NuNee® has performed with astonishing results in that category as well.
NuNee® test results show it has significantly reduced or eliminated Patellofemoral pain (PFP) in most cases.
Marcia, a 50-59 year old female suffering from chronic PFP had this to say while testing NuNee® on just one of her two nagging knees...
"My first experience using this device was emotional. This experience has brought me to tears at certain points. I ALWAYS have extreme pain going up and down stairs. I was able to ascend and descend down a flight of stairs with literally NO pain in my knee. I was also able to get up and down from a sitting position with virtually NO pain in my left knee while other was throbbing. I also biked 12 miles with the device on. Once I got off the bike my knee felt great while I was in pain with the other. I am excited to test this even further with activities such as jogging which I had to give up years ago because of the pain. I am so excited to see what I will be able to accomplish physically with this device!”
Marcia has since used NuNee® on both knees. Here's what she reported...
"Another 12 miles (on my bike) with the device on both knees and absolutely ZERO pain in both."
"Just got back from a 1 mile run...absolutely NO pain!"
The x-ray above left shows a normal knee from the side. The arrows point to the normal amount of space between the bones. In the x-ray above right, the arrows point to narrowed joint space due to patellofemoral arthritis.
Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), also known as patellar overload syndrome and runner's knee, is a condition characterized by knee pain ranging from severe to mild discomfort seemingly originating from the contact of the posterior surface of the patella (back of the kneecap) with the femur (thigh bone).
There are two primary causes, osteoarthritis and maltracking due to musculoskeletal imbalances.
Both conditions can cause the cartilage on the underside of the patella to wear down and become inflamed. When cartilage wears away, it becomes frayed, and when the wear is severe, the underlying bone may become exposed. Moving the bones along this rough surface is painful. Osteoarthritis, is very common in adults over 50. It is due to a gradually progressive thinning of the cartilage related to “normal wear and tear”.
Maltracking is also very common and can affect people of all ages. (https://www.hss.edu/conditions_patellofemoral-disorders-overview.asp)
Why does NuNee® work?
It's really very simple...it relieves the pressure on the your patella (knee cap). Studies reveal that relieving pressure relieves pain. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21172445
Are there any restrictions for using NuNee® ?
The device will soon be registered as FDA class 1...which means it is low risk. Anyone suffering from PFP will likely benefit from it's use. As always, we recommend you speak with your doctor if you have any concerns about using it.
Can I wear it all day?
Yes, NuNee® should be worn during any activity that you normally experience knee discomfort. The only restriction right now is that you must be wearing shorts and cannot use it while kneeling or on all fours. We're already working on a solution for that though.
How long do the knee patches last?
The patches are waterproof and may be worn while bathing. They are designed to stay on for up to 5 days after which we recommend you remove it and wait 12-24 hours before putting a new patch on.

As an endurance athlete, founder Michael Emmerling was frustrated by knee pain while training for Ironman competition. Suffering years of discomfort from arthritic knees he had tried everything...knee supports, kinesiology tape, and physical therapy. Finally, in May 2017 he acted on his instincts and built the first prototype of NuNee®. He went for a 2 hour run that day and found the results were immediate...NO pain.
is to reach every person suffering from Patellofemoral knee pain (PFP) and provide them with a simple low cost solution that will get them moving again...pain free.
